An Austin-Hegeman Family Gathering

This event took placeafter Herb Austin, Jr. swam from Cherry Grove, Fire Island to the Patchogue dock in September 1928 when Herb was 16. Put on your glasses to see who is in the group!

Herb Austin, Jr.with his High School graduation present.

From Sally Austin McCarthy:

"The picture of Uncle Herb........based on his apparent age and the pose, I would suspect that's the car he got when he graduated from high school. I can remember my dad telling us that because Uncle Herb graduated in the 20s, when things were going well__When my dad graduated a few years later it was the heart of the depression, so all he received was $5.00."

From Jere Austin:
"The car in the picture is a '27 or '28 Chevrolet sedan, a graduation from high school present to Herb. It was gray with black running boards and fenders, as was the custom. The solid disc wheels were a novelty. After he and Donna married, they traded it in for a '33 plymouth sedan that had red fenders to match the body! Wow!"

A bouquet of flowers, 7 animals and an old Cadillac! See the enlargement and read what Jere Austin has to say about this photo.

How did people celebrate the end of the depression?

By getting rid of 'Old Man Depression' himself. Herb Austin and unknown friend do the job.
